Theatre of Cruelty is aimed at breaking down the barriers between the actor and the audience- the audience should have an emotional/ visceral response, which they may not fully understand

Artaud is more of a Theorist than a practitioner- he wrote many essays on Theatre- but only actually produced 1 play. As a result, his ideas have to be interpreted and there are many different versions of Theatre of Cruelty out there (many of them are not very creative or actually meet Artaud's ideas beyond screaming and trying to be scary- which is a very simplistic reading of his theatre)

disturbing movements Violent and horrifying images
Vortex of Sound- Several different sounds at the same time,
which are hard to distinguish
Effective use of screams, moans and chanting
Intense, colourful stage lighting
Rejection of traditional Theatrical styles and stages
Action taking place within the audience.
