BEAUTY & THE BEAST - JULY 2015!

Picture
A review by the Headmaster, Mr Elphick:

I saw two of the five nights of Beauty and the Beast and was fortunate enough to see both casts in action. If you didn’t get to any of the shows, I’m sorry; you missed something spectacular! (I believe there is a DVD available for a fee.)

I am genuinely in awe of creative talent; there are simply too many talented and dedicated people, both staff and students to single out for praise and thanks. Our shows develop in different ways every year but I think our audiences would agree that the lighting and sound continue to impress under Mr Asker’s leadership and the generosity of the Parents’ Association. Mrs Snelling with a band of merry helpers including Mr Bain, our cleaning supervisor, created a magical set and some amazing costumes. It is easy to take for granted the band playing for the two hours each evening, again in some sweltering conditions; the professional accomplishment of our musicians under Mrs Love Davies’ direction was astonishing. I would also like to recognise the tireless support of the site staff over months of rehearsals and preparations.

My favourite parts of the show were the large ensemble numbers where the skills of our choreographers, including Sam Haughton, are highlighted, enabling perhaps 60 or more students to dance and sing their hearts out on our small stage. The leads were entertaining and completely believable in their roles. I could draw out particular elements of each student endlessly, comic timing, beautiful singing voices, confidence and ownership of the roles. But I return to my theme of creative talent: Miss Swadkin, once again, created a magical performance from an idea born ten months ago; she selected students through auditions; she inspired dedicated production teams to participate in the magic; with the invaluable support of Miss Fisher she directed and choreographed that magic; she is tireless in her drive to push our students to their limits and they respond with their energy and commitment.

To everyone involved in this masterpiece of musical theatre, thank you. Every contribution was essential for everything to come together and astound audiences night after night. You will have been bound together in a special way by this experience and will carry those memories with you through life. Congratulations to you all!
